En applications marines, il y a 2 classes de fil:
1/ Celui pour les tauds, capotes, biminis. Il a la prétention de faire des coutures étanches, c'est à dire que l'eau ne peut utiliser le fil pour cheminer. Le matériau du fil est étanche et l'ensemble est traité pour empecher le ruissellement etc.
2/ celui pour les voiles
Pour lequel l'étanchéité n'est pas requise.
